Why Do We Care?

This work’s most compelling potential lies in the opportunity to create deep dialogue where none exists. During the past two years, the filmmakers have heard repeatedly from abolitionists who claim they know what is needed to move their cause forward in an intense national discussion.  When probed further, these advocates often admit shying away from those with strong pro-death penalty positions.  Similarly, many who take the most aggressive stance in favor of execution claim a desire for dialogue rather than debate.

With careful, thoughtful editing, opposing sides can be presented in a non-judgmental, side-by-side format.  The juxtaposing of positions can reinforce differences, but also highlight significant common ground.  Connecting the dots from an array of viewpoints can help redefine victimhood and accountability.  This re-constructed dialogue is meant to move viewers toward a new understanding of justice.
